Lapis lazuli as a colour:

Lapis lazuli processed to ultramarine were used as a paint in Afghanistan as early as the 6th century AD. For this purpose, the gemstone is ground into a fine powder. This pigment is lightfast and is mixed with a binding agent to the colour Ultramarine.
It was the finest and most expensive blue used by Renaissance painters.
In Europe, blue was reserved for the most important topic - e.g. the painting of the robes of the Virgin Mary and other holy figures.

In order to extract the blue dye from lapis lazuli, the stones were first finely ground, dried and then ground in water to form a fine, smooth paste. This is dried again and kneaded into dough with a little linseed oil or wax in a weak potassium solution. In this way, the finest particles settle and the dough holds back the foreign matter. The extraction produces the finest blue.

A process for refining the blue was developed in Italy in the 12th and 13th centuries. A paste of ground lapis lazuli, beeswax, resin, rubber and linseed oil was kneaded in dilute alkaline solution. The foreign substances such as calcite and pyrite are retained and the blue particles are obtained by settling. This process significantly increases the brilliance of the blue.
