History of Lapis Lazuli:

The history of lapis lazuli goes back a long way. The lapis lazuli got its name from the Arabic word Azul (meaning blue, or in the figurative sense heaven) and the Latin word Lapis (stone). Excavations show that lapis lazuli was made into jewelry as early as 5000 years before Christ.

Ultramarine blue is the oldest and most brilliant of the blue pigments. It first appeared in the region around Afghanistan, where it was found in wall paintings from the 6th and 7th centuries in the Bamiyan cave temples.
